They have more recently added Windows Hello to the extension, quietly - I actually didn't realize until just now that it is now int he extension.
The desktop app was able to do things like use Windows Hello / biometrics for security - you were either logged into the extension or not, and when you are logged into the extension and the PC is unlocked, it is basically fully accessible.
